Preparing to watch your child walk down the aisle is an amazing time in your life. You are filled with mixed emotions - from pride and joy to fear and sadness. You want the best for them, but somewhere deep inside you wonder where the years went and worry about what lays ahead. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your child at such a special time is to put together a graduation scrapbooking album.

After deciding to create a graduation scrapbook you must decide the overall design or organizational theme. How you do this ultimately depends on what period of time you want to cover:

* Individual layouts to include in an existing album with mixed themes and concepts.

* One big album that covers all aspects of graduation day.

* One big album that covers the entire graduation week.

* A smaller sized album that covers the highlights of the graduation ceremony only.

When deciding what amount of time to cover, consider what festivities your child may be participating in. If they are having a big graduation party then you will probably want to cover that in the scrapbook as well as shots from other parties your child attends. You could rely upon pictures your child takes for these events, or tag along and take some of your own.

Once you have decided what amount of time you want to cover and whether you are covering just the big highlights or every detail of the action, it's time to determine how you will organize your graduation scrapbooking project:

* The week of graduation with sections or single layout pages for each day of the week.

* The big day with sections of corresponding layouts for morning preparations (even if it's sleeping in, get the picture and include it!), afternoon preparations and the big event, and then after-graduation celebrations.

* Categories or chapters with titles such as "partying it up as seniors," "gearing up for the big moment," "walking the aisle," and "final celebrations."

If the big day has already passed, take all of your pictures and spend some time looking at them. You will get some ideas of how to combine them into layouts and establish the overall design by seeing what pictures you have available.

Tips for Finding Supplies & Designing Layouts

Once you know what you are doing, it's time to find the supplies and start designing your layouts. You can do this one of two ways:

* Group your pictures according to layout and then find needed supplies that fit the theme for each.

* Find supplies that you think are fun and appropriate and then combine them into layouts and select accompanying pictures.

Start with scrapbooking supplies that you already have on hand, even if you think none of them are appropriate for graduation scrapbooking. You can use a lot of solid colored paper and embellishment designs that were originally purchased for other themed layouts.

If you are crafty and a bit artistic you can actually create all of your own layout designs and embellishments with low cost solid color paper, colored pens, glitter, and other basic supplies. Some considerations include:

* Cutting out colorful or solid black graduation cap designs and adding a something shiny or decorative on top.

* Create a paper piecing of a graduation boy or girl who resembles your son or daughter.

* Use red paper to create a red carpet look and place closely cut out pictures of your child as if they are walking down the aisle.

* Create attractive decorative border strips and embellish according to the type of layout you are making.

Making your own designs from cheaper supplies will save you money, but it also takes more time to complete each layout this way.

Alternatively, you can look online for graduation scrapbooking supplies specific to the theme. There are a variety of papers, overlays, punches, and a huge assortment of unique embellishments and stickers that may fit perfectly with the designs you are envisioning.

Note that purchasing graduation scrapbooking supplies already made will cost more than making your own, but it will allow you to complete your project faster and have a polished, professional look.

Take your time with graduation scrapbooking and create a treasure that will forever be cherished.
