From gathering your photos and memorabilia, to organizing your supplies, we have some easy tips that you can incorporate into your project. So, let's get started!

Gathering Memories for Your Heritage Scrapbook Pages

Heritage Layout 1

You have probably already started gathering all those old family photos to be used - not just the pictures of great grandmother and grandfather, but also pictures of the house they lived in, vacations they took, and the car they drove. Did you know that for a reasonable price, you can have pictures made from those reel to reel tapes and 8mm films your grandmother has in her closet?

Getting some photos off those old movies will give you some great pictures of christenings, and back yard barbeques. You might even find an old Fourth of July parade your mom or dad attended when they were young!

Have you thought of other things you might want to include in your heritage scrapbook. Things like old marriage certificates, birth announcements, newspaper clippings, old letters and even the recipe for great grandmother's pineapple upside down cake can really make these people come alive. Be sure to include brief memories from family members on those you have never met. It will make them seem more real.

Organizing Your Mementos

Heritage Layout 2

While you are gathering all the material for your scrapbook you could start organizing it at the same time.

An accordion file or two would really help with the organization of your photos. That way you can put all the things you have gathered pertaining to Grandpa Ben in one section, and those pertaining to Aunt Jessie in another. Then when you are ready to put your heritage scrapbook together, you have all the material for each person all together and ready to go.

Putting Together the Scrapbook

There are tons of heritage scrapbooking ideas for putting together your pages. One that is especially great is the idea of photographing the old lace from your great grandmother's or grandmother's wedding dress, and then making your own background paper from the photo. That way not only will the pictures on the page have a bit of family history, but so will the page itself.

Heritage Layout 3

You might even want to make a separate heritage scrapbook for the two different sides of the family. That way you won't miss out on including so many pictures and interesting facts. You could also include the two sides of the family on alternate pages, so you would have each generation together.

Copying some of the older pictures and cropping the copies for your album will let your save the original picture intact while still allowing you to have that great cropped picture of uncle Al.

There are so many different ideas and great ideas for heritage scrapbooking that these ideas are just a start. It is going to be great fun assembling and learning about your family history.
