Scrapbook Adhesives

There really is no best glue or even best type of glue to use when putting together your scrapbook. That's because we're all different and want different things when it comes to our books. Here are a few things to consider when choosing glue.

Scrapbooking Glue You cannot create a scrapbook without an adhesive. The truth is that you use adhesive quite a bit for scrap booking. You have to add adhesive to every layer that you add onto your scrapbook pages It is very important to make sure that you have the right type of scrapbook adhesives. In the past people used to use school glue, rubber cement, or scotch tape on their pages. Luckily now there are many different types of adhesives that you can use to create your scrapbook pages.

Many of the traditional scrapbook adhesives are actually quite harmful to the precious pictures that you have on the pages of your scrapbook. The materials that make them up can actually do a lot of damage to the pictures.

Many of the older adhesives are acid based adhesives. It is this acid that does not react well with photographs. Photographs actually contain acid in them that is placed there during the development process. When you take those photographs that contain acid and combine them with paper, adhesive, or ornamental details that contain acid a chemical reaction can occur. When this chemical reaction happens it will eventually discolor or deteriorate the actual photographs. Instead, when you are shopping for scrapbooking supplies like adhesive you will want to look for acid free products.

When looking for an adhesive you will need to choose the right one for the job that you are trying to achieve. Of course you are going to want to look for a pH neutral or acid-free adhesive, but there are both wet and dry adhesives. Wet adhesive is basically known as glue. There are many different types of glue like paste, a glue stick, spray glue, or traditional liquid glue. Dry adhesives are tape, glue dots, or photo corners.

Photo Corners There are many different ways that you can use adhesive on your scrapbook pages. The most common thing that you are going to be using adhesive on is photographs. You will need to think about how you want to attach you photographs to the scrapbook pages. The question is, are you okay with applying an adhesive directly to the back of your photograph? If you are then you can use glue or tape to put it on the page. However, if you are not then you might want to use photo corners to place the photograph into so that you can remove and replace it easily. I personally prefer the photo corners. I am not a big fan of the glue or tape.

Additionally, you will want to spend some time thinking about how you want to secure the other papers and embellishments. I am a big fan of the tape runner. It is very convenient and is not dangerous to your page.

Tape Runner Occasionally you may need to remove something that you had secured to your scrapbook page, and when this happens you need to find an adhesive remover. There are many different adhesive removers on the market. It certianly does not hurt to have one of these on hand in case you ever need it.

There are some easy tricks that you can keep in mind to help you take care of your photographs without exposing them to dangerous acids. Magnetic photo albums contain an adhesive on the pages, and it is this adhesive that can actually start to damage your pictures. When you are purchasing scrap booking adhesives you should always be sure to read the labels, and pay attention to the smell of the adhesives. If the adhesive that you are looking at has a strong smell to it then you know that there is acid in it.

Adhesives can be your best friend when you are scrapbooking. However, you need to be a bit careful with the adhesives that you are purchasing. Be sure that you read labels and use them properly so that you can display and not damage your cherished memories.

Doing a little bit of research into finding the right glue will make sure that your photos stay in top shape and your scrapbooks stay stuck together.
