Need Scrapbooking Page Ideas? Start Here...

When you hit a creative wall or just can't seem to find your mojo, it's time to try out some new scrapbooking page ideas!

Fortunately, for anyone that needs a little inspiration, there are plenty of places to look...

First, pull out the scrapbook magazines and books you have collected over the years. If you have already shuffled through them several times, take a trip to the library or the store to pick up a few new ones. There's nothing like a little eye candy to get the creative juices flowing again!

You can also visit message boards and forums frequented by other scrappers to see what's being posted. Check out the layouts they have uploaded, read about different techniques, and find out about new products hitting the market. Don't just lurk though! Ask questions, add comments, get feedback, and join in a challenge or two. Before you know it, you will be feeling scrappy again in no time!

Of course, you can also find some great scrapbooking page ideas right here! I have put together a list of a few of my personal favorites. However, before we get started, if you are looking for theme-specific scrapbooking page ideas (i.e. wedding, prom, maternity, baby, Disney, etc.), skip down to the bottom - you will find a table of contents there to take you where you need to go.

Scrapbooking Page Ideas

However, for general ideas, you're in the right place, so let's get started...

Scrapbooking Page Ideas for Layouts

Use sketches to determine picture placement.
When I put together a layout, I almost always use a sketch to determine how to layout my pics and other page elements. Without one to guide me, I feel lost! However, this takes me to my next point...

Make the sketch your own.
If you want to flip it, rotate it, add in other pictures, or use a different layout size, go for it! Sketches are just meant to be guidelines and are there to provide inspiration. The rest is up to you and your own personal interpretation of it - after all, scrapbooking is an art form!

Make your layouts interactive.
Need examples? Make a pocket for your page from cardstock to hold additional photos or other extras. Add peek-a-boo flaps for hidden journaling. Experiment by using hinges, zippers, and other interactive elements on your scrapbook pages.

Add dimension to your layouts.
Use dimensional adhesives, such as pop up glue dots and foam tape, to adhere die cuts, photos, and other elements to your layouts. Using dimensional adhesives to create three-dimensional effects is one of the easiest scrapbooking page ideas I know - and I use it all the time!

Add texture to your pages.
Use crumpled cardstock and torn paper to add visual interest. You can also add texture to cardstock and scrapbooking paper, by running them through a paper crimper or an embossing machine, such as the Sizzix Texture Boutique or Cuttlebug.

The vintage look is "in".
Give cardstock, paper, and chipboard a worn, vintage look by sanding the edges with sandpaper, steel wool, or an emery board. You can also use ink or chalk to give them a timeworn appearance.

Scrapbooking Page Ideas for Photos

When looking for scrapbooking page ideas, don't forget to look to your photos to get your creativity flowing...

Organize your photos.
Sometimes you think you need inspiration, when what you actually need is a little organization. It's much easier to scrapbook if your pictures are already organized by event or date.

Create a "Now & Then" layout.
Combine a picture from the past with one from the present for a truly special layout. For example, your daughter's graduation layout could include a photo of her receiving her high school diploma, along with a pic of her preschool graduation.

Combine black and white snapshot with color photos.
If you want to combine pictures on a layout, but they just don't seem to be "working together", consider substituting some with black and white photos. This is also a great way to make a favorite picture stand out as the focal point.

Crop and enlarge digital photos.
In some photos, the background may be distracting or a key element may get lost, such as an expression on a subject's face. Use photo editing software to crop the photo. For a cool effect, use cropped versions along with the originals in a single layout.

Trim photos to remove distractions.
In the simple scrapbook layouts section of this website, I have put together a collection of sketches using 4" x 6" photos. Although these are good for beginners to use, as well as those pressed for time, don't be afraid to pull out the paper trimmer and cut photos down to size. Some of my favorite family layouts used a variety of cropped pics.

Mat photos to prevent them from being "lost" against the layout background.
Matting is easy to do, and is one of the most popular scrapbooking page ideas using photos. There are a couple of different methods, but my favorite is to simply "eyeball" it. I first adhere to pic to the cardstock or paper, and then trim the edges of the paper or cardstock with my paper trimmer, leaving a uniform border to frame the picture.

Use window matting placed over the top of a picture.
The window can be cut in a variety of shapes - hearts or stars, for example - and then placed over the top of a picture. This creates a focal point, as well as eliminates other distracting elements within the picture.

Keep the white border.
If you print pictures at home, or have them developed with a white border, don't trim it off. Keep the white border and use it as a faux mat.

Use memorabilia instead of pictures.
When most people think of scrapbooking, they think of photographs. However, you can put together a fantastic layout without a single picture. Instead of pics, base the layout around memorabilia, such as ticket stubs, maps, or artwork.

Create a mosaic with your photos.
One of my favorite scrapbooking page ideas is to cut my photos into smaller squares, and then piece them back together into a mosaic, leaving "white space" between the pieces.

Keep backups of digital photos.
Don't torture yourself by worrying about ruining your pictures. If you have a backup copy on the computer, all you will need to do is run another one if things don't turn out right. If the picture was prior to the "digital age", scan it into your computer first. Don't forget to make regular backups of your digitized pictures, storing them on a second hard drive or on an online photo site.

Scrapbooking Page Ideas for Journaling

At a loss for words? Yes, journaling can be one of the most difficult parts of putting together scrapbook layouts, but here are some ideas to get over your writer's block...

Use poems, quotes or song lyrics.
If you can't think of anything to write, see if you can find a poem, quote, or lyrics from a song to express how the pictures in the layout make you feel.

Write about what's in the picture.
Tell the story of what's happening by answering the basic questions of who, what, where, when and why. Although these details may seem obvious to you, remember that your scrapbooks may be handed down to future generations, who would enjoy having this information to go along with the pictures.

On the other hand, write about what's NOT in the picture.
Did something funny happen that wasn't caught by the camera? Do the pictures have sentimental value to you? Were they taken on a day of historical significance? These scrapbooking page ideas can all be starting points for your journaling.

Refer to your notes.
Specific details can escape even those with the best memories. Pull out your notes, calendars and date books, or go through old e-mail messages to refresh your memory. Better yet, start keeping a small journal with you at all times to record your thoughts and feelings during special occasions, as well as everyday life.

Interview your subject.
For example, for the layout of your first grader's school picture, interview him - ask him what he wants to be when he grows up, what's his favorite school lunch and school subject. You may already know the answers, but it's fun to journal his responses using his own words.

Write a letter.
Some layouts can be an emotional experience to create. When putting together these types of layouts, write a letter to yourself or to the subject of your pictures, and use this for your journaling. If you want to keep these thoughts private, you can hide it on your layouts, which leads me to...

Use hidden journaling.
If their is not enough room on your page for journaling, or if you prefer to keep your writing private, you can use flaps, page pockets, or even attach your journaling to the back of the layout.

Use numbered journaling.
If you are using multiple photos, why not number them, and then use numbered journaling to explain the events in each photo.

Mix up the fonts.
If you use your computer for journaling, don't feel that you have to stick with one font. For example, if you are using conversational style journaling, use different fonts for each person in the conversation.

Use transparent or vellum paper to write straight.
If your handwritten journaling tends to get a bit crooked, why not write on a transparent or semi-transparent sheet of paper. You can place it over a sheet of lined notebook paper when writing, and then use spray adhesive to attach it to your page, letting the background papers and embellishments show through.
