These vellum scrapbooking ideas will give you new and creative ideas for using this popular embellishment in your layouts.
Everyone who does scrapbooking on any level should have a variety of vellum on hand at all times. Vellum is a unique type of paper that is transparent, even when it is colored or patterned. Since it can be used in such a wide variety of ways, it often adds that final touch to a layout that makes it feel just perfect.
My favorite use of vellum is a tie-together for a series of scrapbook pages covering the same event. For example, I recently made six different layouts covering photos of a close friend's wedding. Though each layout used a different color or pattern of background paper, they were all pulled together by the use of a delicate flower patterned vellum paper.
One page used the vellum as an overlay with cutouts for the photos while another page used the vellum as a border and yet another page used it as small envelopes that held some mementos from the wedding. They were each different yet fit together beautifully just because I tied them together with the use of that vellum.
There are many ways to incorporate this paper into your layouts, and just a few of the more common ways will be discussed here.
Vellum Overlay
Since scrapbooking vellum is so transparent, you can lay it over top of the layout or portions of the layout as an overlay. This can create a variety of different effects on the page, depending on the color or pattern of the vellum and what you are laying it over.
One neat thing about overlaying with vellum is that you can create some unusual colors or even make a photo look smoky. Spend some time playing with vellum and overlapping it with a variety of paper and you will start to get an overflow of ideas for new layout features.
Accents
If you enjoy creating your own accent pieces for layouts, vellum should always be on hand. You can use it for anything that needs that sheer or see-through look, such as windows, ponds, ice cubes, bubbles, angel wings, or even balloons. I once created a lollipop pop-up to go at the corner of a large photo of my little girl sucking her first lollipop. The unique appearance of the pink vellum gave that lollipop the most precious look!
Page Partitions
When you overlay specific portions of your layout with vellum you can create partitions on the page that become essential to the layout. For instance, you might place large columns of the vellum along the edges of a layout. You have now created two distinct sections on the page and can place journaling blocks underneath the vellum sections while photos fill up the center of the page.
Another idea is to use a solid sheet of background paper and vellum in a nicely coordinating solid color to create a checkerboard effect. The squares with vellum can hold stickers or other accent pieces while the open paper squares hold photos of someone's face. I once did this with my daughter's friend's faces from a sleepover she had and used vellum sleeping bags of my own creation along the bottom of the page.
The options for incorporating vellum scrapbooking into your layouts are limited only by your imagination. When you need a unique idea for a new layout, just spend time playing with vellum and something may come to mind.
